The department is located on south of Massif Central, between Montpellier and Clermont Ferrand.
It is also the french department of records : the much average altitude , the less populated department, many springs…
Finally, it is a department with recognizable mountain landscapes : Aubrac, Margeride, Grands Causses and Cévennes.
Chestnuts land and seat of Protestantism, Cevennes massif strechts from Ardèche to Herault crossing Lozère.
Its schist relief and uneven valleys have led a welcome identity based on silk work, mines and its symbol, « bread tree ».
On its rocky spur, Rebirth castle was the siege of Severac lords.
Today, it is the proud guardian of the Aveyron river, which is born few kilolmeters upstream. It is also the place for medieval shows.
Gévaudan capital, the 12 000 inhabitants have built their houses around the imposing cathedral of 14th century.This monument was built by Urbain V Pope, who was born in Lozère.
Old royal capital in Gévaudan, near Aubrac, Marvejols has kept its three fortified doors thanks to Henri IV king.
Volcanic plateau of the south of Massif Central, Aubrac is situated between Aveyron, Cantal and Lozère. Its desert is the place of Aubrac cow and Aligot, purée with cheese.
You will admire its traditions such as folklore, its typical’s farms (« burons »), and the famous knife of Laguiole.

High place of Lozerian tourism, Tarn gorges are constituated by deep valleys formed by limestone plateaux.
This gorges belong to Cevennes National Park and Unesco World Heritage. Its canyons are 500 meters high, and constitute an exceptional heritage wich enable to do climbing or canoe.
